This course explains Southeast Asia’s situation during the Cold War. It draws on the work of Harry J. Benda and J. S. Furnivall to present the trends of Indianization, Sinicization, and Hispanicization in Southeast Asia in the Cold War Era, and to explain the emergence of nationalism. The formation of the Southeast Asian Treaty Organization is also covered. Readings are included on political elites in Southeast Asia as well as on communism and nationalism in Burma.
